Research Associate in Environmental Science and Physical Geogrpahy
Grade 6 £33,518 - £39,992 per annum
plus £2,923 London Allowance
We wish to appoint a staff member to lead day-to-day operation of the Fire Emissions Testing Chamber (FETCh), a new facility of King’s College London funded primarily by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to provide King’s researchers with a controlled environment in which to study the physical and chemical processes involved with landscape biomass burning and other biomass burning (e.g. woodburning). This will include characterisation of their gas and aerosol emissions ( IR imaging and spectroscopy).
FETCh consists of a 2.5 m long ‘burn chamber’ and attached laboratory space housing the instrumentation, housed at our collaborators Rothamsted Research (Harpenden, Hertfordshire). This is a rural location around 25-mins train ride from London King’s Cross, and it may be useful if the selected candidate was able to base themselves closer to here than Central London (though not essential). A PhD is useful for this role, which will involve a mix of research and technical work, but other experience will be considered. The selected candidate will be expected to lead on some research publications, and contribute to others.
An example of one type of experiment able to be conducted using FETCh is described in:
Freeborn, P.H., Wooster, M.J., Hao, W.M., Ryan, C.A., Nordgren, B.L., Baker, S.P. and Ichoku, C., 2008. Relationships between energy release, fuel mass loss, and trace gas and aerosol emissions during laboratory biomass fires. JGR Atmospheres, 113(D1). Available at https://www.fs.fed.us/rm/pubs_other/rmrs_2008_freeborn_p001.pdf
This post will be offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 12 months in the first instance. Applicants wishing to work part-time will also be considered.
